| Meet Honshu's Mika Kitsune.
At times demure and at times bold, Mika continues to grow into quite the young lady. Even at this young of an age, the exemplary breeding can often be seen in her overall intelligence, in her poise as she stands and her grace as she trots at the end of her lead. Mikas’ puppy fluff is steadily giving way to a beautiful coat of shiny red fur that leaves us anxious to see what she will look like when she reaches adulthood. Full of spirit and energy, she is always ready willing and able to play catch or tug-of-war with the children, who are at times also her favorite chewy toy.
Mika has long been house trained (almost from the time she came home) and the breed intelligence is clearly demonstrated by the number of basic commands and tricks that she has learned in a very short period of time; however, being a Shiba, she obeys these instructions when she feels like it. Even as well socialized as she is, there are hints of the fabled Shiba aloofness evident in her personality at times, but this has only served to endear her to us all the more.
Basic instructions such as sit, stay, come, down, and out… came easy to her, in fact she was eager to learn them. More complicated tricks, such as learning to “sit-up”, shake, “find the children”, and basic agility tricks like walking a balance beam are also being learned at a quick pace.
Her heath is exceptional. She continues to gain weight at a steady and predictable pace, and the partial raw diet recommended by the breeder (and endorsed by her vet) seems to be working wonders. Her coat is shiny, her teeth are strong, and her weight is “perfect” according to her vet.
She has clear likes and dislikes in her diet, for example we know that her favorite treat is a whole raw chicken wing coated in peanut butter and that she really dislikes lamb. Another new favorite is our own mixture of raw ground turkey, steamed rice, and broccoli. She is also very fond of lasagna as we discovered during Christmas dinner. Her diet is rounded out nicely by a bit of Eukanuba kibble in her bowl at all times for her to nibble on should the mood hit her.
Mika, like all puppies, has had a tendency to chew and she has a done quite a job on the leg of our coffee table. This behavior was quickly corrected by the purchase of a Kong pet toy.
Even in those times that she is a “curly tailed demon” Mika brings unspeakable joy and love to the family. We are compiling a video that will soon be available on the web site to show Mika in action.
Mika carries the promise of being Honshu's next home bred champion and will be eligible to entering her first competition in April 2004.
Please be sure to visit us here at Honshu Kennels over the next few months for more updates on Mika as she meets the world and begins her journey to becoming a Champion Shiba Inu.
